Byron Daniel Stuart diary, 1861-1862.

This collection contains a typewritten transcription of Byron Daniel Stuart's diary from 12 September 1861 through 12 May 1862. Within this diary, Stuart related his experiences as a new soldier as he and his troop traveled south to Savannah, where they were involved in the April 1862 siege of Fort Pulaski. Stuart played symbols in his regiment's band and often mentioned serenading his colonel and Gen. Sherman as well as being part of the regiment's dress parades in camp.

Byron Daniel Stuart was born May 1843 in Schuyler County, New York and was the son of John William Stuart (1811-1881) and Hannah (Hattie) McCarty (b. 1817). During the Civil War (1861-1865), Stuart served in the 48th Regiment of New York Volunteers and played in the band. Stuart died at Fort Pulaski in Savannah, Georgia on 16 June 1862.
